There are a couple of new dishes that I have tried recently that I really liked. One is an entree and one is a dessert. Right after Fiona was born we had some friends (the wife is a terrific cook) bring us over dinner one night. We invited them to stay and eat it with us. At the time, I didn't know she had brought Shepherd's Pie and I thought to myself, "Oh crap! I have to eat this in front of her and pretend to enjoy it!"
The reason I had this reaction was because the last time I had Shepherd's Pie, I was 13 years old and in London. You would think, since it's a native dish, that it would be really good there. It was not. I guess it was just the place we had it. I don't know but it was so gross. So, that being said, I did not want to eat this. I thought I'd be nice and shove it in and pretend to like it. We sat down and portioned it out onto each person's plate. It was time to dig in and...it was great!
It was so delicious! I enjoyed it so much I got her recipe. Whew! That was a close one. I thought I'd have to use some acting skills to get through that dinner but it turned out to be a great one. I just managed to snag her recipe and make it myself recently. Rick and I enjoyed sitting down together and sharing in some Shepherd's Pie.
I love to make desserts. I usually try to make a nice cake for special occasions and big church group events. Rick's family was here a few weeks ago for Fiona's baptism, so in honor of that occasion, plus Father's Day and our brother-in-laws birthday, I made a layer cake. I love almond flavor, so I made a chocolate almond cake with cheesecake filling and buttercream icing. Not to brag, but it was so good. Not because I made it, but because it's dessert and we love dessert. Rick's family are big sweets people. Needless to say, I ate a couple pieces that week, and I did not lose any baby weight like I had been trying to do. hahaha. Oh well. It was so good though.
